Drawing Using Only Hatch Lines
Hatch Line Drawings prove to be a great way to walk into different shading techniques. The traditional approach is to use hatch lines, cross hatch lines and stippling to create shading. Using only hatch lines gives the drawing more control over feeling out the texture and surface of any subject, especially portraits, trees, etc. Using the provided pages of great masters and other images, the work is all done for you. These images are perfect for students to explore creating only with lines alone. Once the drawing is completed students are given the opportunity to transform the drawing into a painting by adding watercolor, color pencil, or mixed media. When using color pencil I always have a small container of baby oil and que-tips available for students to use after they have completed a color pencil drawing. By adding in the baby oil the color lead blends beautifully together to transform a drawing into a painting. Below are some samples of creating only with hatch lines and leaving them as such as well as transforming them into paintings.
