Slaves were not allowed to read in the south. As a result they had to learn how to ready symbols that would guide them to freedom. Quaker farmers lived all along the east coast. They would post these symbols on their barns as well as a quilt for slaves to read. I have taken each symbol and produced it four up on a page. This arrangement allows for a nice graphic to emerge out of the students imagination. The graphic only really works if there is balance, symmetry or order to the colors chosen and where they are placed. Once all the students are done cut out all the four patterns of all the symbols and tape them together to create your own quilt to display in your classroom or school.
